Virtual Shadowing
Welcome to our virtual shadowing program! Shadowing sessions span a variety of specialties, allowing you to look into the world behind trauma surgery, OB/GYN, dermatology and much more! Sessions are free to attend and livestreamed on Youtube. In order to be awarded shadowing hours, the session's quiz must be passed with a minimum score of 60% on the first attempt. Quizzes are available 6 days after each session by 11:59pm CT. For example, a Thursday session's quiz will be due the following Wednesday at 11:59pm CT. Joan Lien, MD
Dr. Joan Lien, a board-certified pediatrician and 2nd-year neonatal-perinatal medicine fellow at the University of Oklahoma, brings a unique background in biomedical engineering and extensive clinical experience. Originally from Louisiana, she earned her BS-MSE from Tulane University, where her passion for healthcare emerged through roles as an EMT and leadership in Tulane University EMS. After working as a biomedical engineer in New Orleans, she pursued her dream of becoming a doctor, joining LSUHSC and co-founding the first New Orleans chapter of Sling Health. Her journey continued with a pediatrics residency at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN before embarking on her current fellowship. Dr. Lien is enthusiastic about reaching the midpoint of her fellowship, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to provide compassionate care to NICU babies in her future practice.

Dr. Rodrigo Gerardo is currently in the research years of his general surgery residency as a pediatric surgery research fellow at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He attended medical school at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine where he also received a concentration in Global Health after mission trips to Jamaica and Uganda. During his time in medical school, he served as the Social Chair for the Student Council. During medical school, Dr. Gerardo also worked as a medical student producer for The Dr. Oz Show where he produced and vetted content for the Emmy Award-winning 8th season of the show.
Thomas Scalea, MD

Dr. Thomas Scalea is globally recognized as a pioneer in leadership and advancing the field of shock and injury care. As Physician in Chief of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, he heads the only freestanding trauma center in the nation and the best known trauma center in the world. It cares for over 8000 critically injured patients annually with a 96% survival. In 2001, Dr. Scalea established a military training program, CSTARS that has trained more than 4000 Air Force personnel. He has health leadership positions in many national organizations and has received many local, regional and national honors. Dr. Scalea is a funded investigator and remains a prolific investigator mentoring many investigators from his department.
Kristin Yates, DO

Dr. Kristin Yates is an OB/GYN in private practice and a certified life coach. She went to medical school at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri (known as the founding school of osteopathic medicine). Dr. Yates completed residency at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from residency in 2016. After feeling self-doubt as she started her career as a physician, Dr. Yates bounced back and sought to help other women struggling with self-doubt as physicians. She helps woman physicians to get rid of self-doubt and cultivate genuine confidence. Dr. Yates also hosts her podcast, Imposter to Unstoppable, where she explores how physicians can overcome Imposter Syndrome and create the career of their dreams.
Morgan Murphrey, MD, MS

Dr. Morgan Murphrey completed her undergraduate degree with a major in biochemistry and minor in psychology at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo. Dr. Murphrey continued on to complete medical school at Creighton University. Afterwards, she finished her preliminary medicine intern year at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Just recently, in July 2020, Dr. Murphrey then went on to dermatology residency training at UC Davis. With an interest in healthcare ethics and policy, she also pursued a Master of Science in Health Care Ethics. Dr. Murphrey also carries a passion for mentoring aspiring physicians through help on their path in medicine.

Dr. Adedeji Olusanya is the co-founder and President of Mentoring Minorities in Medicine, a non-profit organization aimed at changing the narrative of underrepresented minorities in medicine. Dr. Olusanya founded Mentoring Minorities in Medicine as he strives to be an example for the next generation of physicians. Through scholarship and mentoring opportunities, he seeks to open doors of support to those who are next in line. For his undergraduate degree, Dr. Olusanya attended the University of Central Florida. Afterwards, he completed his medical degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Olusanya is now a resident physician training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at UT Health San Antonio.
Amanda Xi, MD, MSE

Originally from Metro-Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Amanda Xi is a Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) anesthesiologist and intensivist. Dr. Xi is an MD graduate of Oakland University William Beaumont. Afterwards, she completed a transitional year as a resident at Henry Ford Hospital and continued on to her anesthesiology residency at MGH. Finally, Dr. Xi completed training with her critical care fellowship at MGH. She is an active leader in the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) and ACGME along with a lover of all things technology. Dr. Xi has her own Youtube channel and blog, where she includes medical student resources, a specialty series, and more insight into anesthesiology.

Dr. Brian Smith is a gastrointestinal surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic, robot-assisted and open surgeries of the gastrointestinal tract, including bariatric procedures. Dr. Smith completed general surgical residency at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at UC Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Smith now serves as Chief of Surgical Services at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. He also serves on the board of directors of the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and is president of the California chapter of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Smith is Associate Residency Program Director for UC Irvine’s general surgical residency program and carries a passion for resident education.
Richard Wender, MD

Dr. Richard Wender is the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in the Perelman School of Medicine. He has dedicated his career to leading medical and public health efforts that strive to improve the quality of primary care, implement population health, and address social determinants of health in the continuous pursuit of equity in health outcomes. Dr. Wender previously served as the first Chief Cancer Control Officer of the American Cancer Society. His Cancer Control team launched a transformative national initiative to achieve 80% colorectal cancer screening rates in every community and an enterprise-wide effort to help build healthier communities. As Chair of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and a member of the steering committee for the President’s Cancer Panel screening initiative, Dr. Wender is helping to lead efforts to promote uptake of cancer screening services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Vidhya Prakash is the Founder and Director of the SIU Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science (AWIMS). Through the HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program), she joined the United States Air Force and completed Internal Medicine residency at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) followed by Infectious Diseases fellowship training. Before joining SIU School of Medicine, she served as an infectious disease specialist in the United States Air Force for ten years on active duty status. In the Department of Medicine, Dr. Prakash serves as vice chair of Clinical Affairs and chair of the Clinical Competency Committee. On the national level, she serves as director of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) membership committee. Dr. Prakash is also the author of her book: Learning to Listen: A Memoir.

Dr. Stephanie Zeszutek is a board-certified OB/GYN, a pharmacist, and an Associate Professor and Course Director for Physical Diagnosis in the Department of Primary Care at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a health policy fellow, she is a strong advocate for policies to increase access to care and preventative medicine. Dr. Zeszutek received a Pharmacy degree from St. John’s School of Pharmacy and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Bronx, NY. She is an active member of the Orange County Medical Society and serves on the Executive Board. Dr. Zeszutek has a clinical practice in the Orange County area with a focus on preventative medicine, women’s health and anti-aging.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin for pharmacy school then pursued medical education at the McGovern School of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Harris is a lifelong learner and completed his MBA at the University of Houston. He is also an experienced life science consultant who has helped several startups navigate the healthcare market, especially from a holistic perspective. A true entrepreneur, Dr. Harris co-founded New Spectrum Educational Consultants, an educational consulting company that helps students achieve success through resilience and social-emotional learning. He is an avid reader, weight lifter, video game enthusiast, and author in his spare time.
Lattisha Bilbrew, MD

Dr. Lattisha Bilbrew is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon subspecialized in hand and upper extremity surgery. Dr. Bilbrew completed her medical degree at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. She chose to pursue orthopedic surgery and attended residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Bilbrew then specialized in hand and upper extremity surgery with a fellowship at the University of Florida. Over her career, she has earned several awards and honors including the Pfizer Award in Excellence and Medical Research, Texas Orthopaedic Association Resident Research Award, and the Women in Surgery Conference Featured Speaker. She has also been published within the field of orthopedic surgery and her subspecialty of hand and upper extremity surgery. Dr. Bilbrew practices at Resurgens Orthopaedics, which has the most female orthopedic surgeons of any orthopedic group in the nation.

Dr. Olivia Campa is a general internist at the University of California Davis Medical Center where she also serves as the Director of the Postbaccalaureate Program, the Associate Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of General Internal Medicine and a Core Faculty Member for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Being the first person in her family to graduate from college, Dr. Campa is passionate about mentoring and promoting the success of diverse students at many levels of education to encourage them to successfully become providers that enhance care delivery. Her efforts to promote diversity and inclusion have earned her award recognition including the AAMC Herbert Nickens Award, AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Award, and several teaching awards in UC Davis's School of Medicine and its Health System.

Dr. Leonard Lee graduated from then UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden. He completed his general surgery residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center, New York Medical College. He then completed fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2001. Dr. Lee was later recruited to Hackensack Medical Center as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vice Chairman of the Heart and Vascular Hospital where he stayed for a period of just one year before being recruited to then UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In addition to responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery, he fulfills the role of James W. Mackenzie, M.D., Professor and Chair for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Lee has been featured on platforms including Insider and GQ where he has showcased insights as a cardiothoracic surgeon, garnering millions of views.
Donald Batisky, MD

Dr. Donald Batisky is a pediatric nephrologist and clinician-educator at heart. At Emory, Dr. Batisky is the executive director of the Pre-Health Advising office in the Emory College of Arts & Sciences. In the Emory School of Medicine, he is a small group advisor in the Osler Society and chairs the Educational Development Committee of the School of Medicine's Executive Curriculum Committee. Dr. Batisky has served as a member of the NICHD Working Group on Pediatric Hypertension and has been a member of the International Pediatric Hypertension Association, having served as Education Chair for over ten years. In that role, he has been actively involved in the Program Planning Committees of the Pediatric Academic Societies and the American Hypertension Associations annual meetings. Dr. Sonya Sloan, aka #OrthoDoc, has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the male-dominated field of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Sloan completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine where she made history as both the first African-American female Intern in General Surgery and the first African-American female Orthopedic Surgery resident. She has authored and published research projects in Orthopedic Surgery and a joint venture with NASA, Johnson Space Center. Dr. Sloan currently serves on several Board of Trustees including, Black Women Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Institute of Spirituality and Health, RoweDocs Telemedicine, and Tristar Global Medical Inc. She is a consultant, blogger, and speaker for CompHealth and DairyMax, a national partner to the NFL and Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, which promotes proper youth daily nutrition. As a serial entrepreneur, Dr. Sloan helped to launch a telemedicine company as the Virtual OrthoDoc, one of the first of its kind in telehealth and orthopedics. In 2016, Dr. Sloan was chosen as the TEDMED Front Line Scholars. Additionally, she has been listed as one of the “Top 25 Women in Houston,” and has been featured in Essence Magazine and several national publications.

Dr. Christopher Cirino is an infectious diseases specialist with more than 20 years of experience in practice. He completed his residency at George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC) after graduating from Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Cirino returned to GWUMC for his fellowship in infectious dis-eases. Dr. Cirino currently practices in a few settings in Portland, including as an infectious diseases specialist and public health officer. Dr. Marianne Cosgrove has been a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist since January 1991. She is a graduate of the Yale New Haven Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia and received her Master’s degree in the Biological Sciences: Anesthesia from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in 1993. She received a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree in 2011 and her PhD in Health Related Sciences: Nurse Anesthesia in 2019 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently, she is the program director of the Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) School of Nurse Anesthesia, adjunct faculty at CCSU, a clinical educator/practicing CRNA at YNHH, and founder/co-owner of Core Concepts Anesthesia Review, LLC. Her research interests include the optimization of study and test-taking skills, novel approaches to teaching observational skills, and human factors and anesthetist performance in the setting of elevated ambient noise in the OR.

Dr. Jaleen Sims is a practicing board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in Jackson, Mississippi. She is also the Associate Program Director for Wellness, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Sims is an active participant in several organizations, including Mississippi State Medical Association, Mississippi Medical and Surgical Association and American College of Obstetricians Gynecologists. With these organizations she strives to amplify the voices of patients and physicians. She is the co-founder and Vice-President of Sims Foundation of H.O.P.E., Inc. Through her foundation she hosts an annual conference called, Imagine You, for middle and high school girls aimed at promoting health and wellness, career and personal development and positive self-images. Dr. Hana Hobbs is a practicing periodontist with over 25 years of experience. She earned her DDS from the University of Maryland Dental School, graduating magna cum laude. Dr. Hobbs completed her General Practice Residency at York Hospital and was the Chief Resident afterwards at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Hobbs worked as general dentist in Charlotte for several years before deciding to specialize in Periodontics. She attended the University of California at San Francisco where she earned her certificate in Periodontology Specialty while simultaneously earning a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology. She received the “Most Innovative” Clinical Research Award in her Senior Year from the Western Society of Periodontology. She has been an Assistant Professor at UNC School of Dentistry’s Periodontology Department since 1997 and she served as President of the North Carolina Society of Periodontology in 2014.

Dr. Nicole Plenty is a double board-certified OB/GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist, blogger, public speaker, and patient advocate. Dr. Plenty’s passion for service is also evident through her international advocacy and medical missions work in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Jamaica. Most recently, she launched Pregnancy Pearls with Dr. Plenty, a website and vlog she created to help patients advocate for themselves by providing pre-/post-conception advice and education regarding complications of pregnancy. She has received local, state, and national honors for her involvement in health policy, mentorship, and her work in community advocacy. Among those, she has received Top 40 under 40 recognitions from the National Minority Quality Forum, the National Medical Association, the Indianapolis Business Journal, as well as her alma mater, Xavier University of LA. She has served as an advisor to various companies, most recently being the Women’s Health Advisor for Physician Promise, a new telehealth company, and a clinical instructor for Medical Education Without Borders.

Raised in New Jersey with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Emory University in neuroscience and behavioral biology, Dr. Kaplan completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from New York University College of Dentistry with honors in pediatric dentistry. She subsequently completed her pediatric residency, also at New York University College of Dentistry. Among her academic accolades, Dr. Kaplan is proud to have been the recipient of the prestigious American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Predoctoral Student Award, which is given to one senior student who shows the most promise in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Kaplan takes special pride in her overseas volunteer work in Nicaragua, Nepal and Grenada. Since graduating from residency, she has worked on the Upper East Side of New York City in a multi-specialty group as the lead pediatric dentist. She sees children of all ages and enjoys all aspects of private practice.

Mike Roberts grew up poor in Louisville, Kentucky. After high school, he left for the military to gain experience and attend college. His first exposure to medicine took place when he signed up as a Navy Corpsman. The medical training is broad but revolves around combat medicine such as treating gunshot wounds, traumatic amputations, and doing emergent airways. His undergraduate degree was in healthcare management, although he found the PA field more fitting. The idea of autonomy and still being part of a team appealed to him. He found the work-life balance and lateral mobility of the PA field enjoyable. After graduating from Sullivan University’s PA program, Mike currently works in pulmonary and critical care.

Dr. Jeremy Grossman is an Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Resident at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He is a Sackler School of Medicine-NYS Branch graduate, where his work as founder of “The Homeless Project: Tel Aviv” took 1st Place from the Social Justice Project & Paper. He also has a Bachelors in Psychology and Biology from the University of California, Irvine. Among his many volunteer interests is a counselor at Camp Conrad Chinnock, a non-profit youth summer camp for children with diabetes. He began as a young camper and earned the camp’s Michael White Award for his years of commitment. Dr. Grossman plans to continue volunteering with the camp’s medical team and hopes to one day serve as the camp’s medical director. He would like to practice medicine in impoverished and underserved communities and looks forward to the multigenerational treatment of the family as a unit. Dr. Grossman speaks fluent Hebrew and enjoys playing acoustic guitar, weight training, and his Belgian Shepard.

Dr. Monica Wheeler was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. At a young age, she discovered the art and science of dentistry through numerous summer science programs, and fell in love with it. She graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2006 with a degree in Biology, and from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee in 2011. In 2012, Dr. Wheeler completed a General Practice Residency Program at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, New Jersey, where she received advanced training and mentorship in various fields of dentistry. Dr. Wheeler practiced dentistry in Nashville/Brentwood, Tennessee for a few years, after completing my residency, and moved to North Carolina in 2014. She loves the field of dentistry which she holds a firm belief to encompass being a doctor, artist, and engineer all in one, while it allows the chance to help others achieve improvements that will affect their overall health and confidence. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with my family and friends, traveling, reading, bike riding and community outreach programs with the local chapter of my sorority.

Dr. Jennifer Chevinsky is a double-boarded Preventive Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine Physician serving as the Deputy Public Health Officer for Riverside County Public Health, an Assistant Professor for Loma Linda University’s Department of Preventive Medicine and School of Public Health, and an Editor for the American Journal of Preventive Medicine Focus Journal. She recently joined Riverside County after working for the CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer for over 2 years. While at CDC, she participated in multiple deployments for the COVID pandemic and was the lead author for the CDC’s interim guidance on post-COVID conditions, also known as long COVID. In Riverside County, Dr. Chevinsky serves as the Medical Advisor for the COVID-19 response, as the TB controller, treating patients with tuberculosis throughout the county, and oversees the Division of Infectious Disease, Community Health Planning, and Health Equity as well as the Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Student Training Programs.

Dr. Cyrus was born and raised in Washington D.C. It was in high school when he first realized his interest in orthodontics during his own orthodontic treatment. This interest led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from the University of Maryland at College Park where he furthered his studies in biomechanics and biomaterials. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore where he graduated Magna Cum Lade and at the top of his class. He then completed his postdoctoral specialty training in orthodontics at Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester. This is recognized as one of the top orthodontic residency programs in the country, and more importantly where he met his beautiful wife, who is also an orthodontist! This is what led him out to San Diego where she grew up her whole life.

Dr. Umair Shah was appointed Secretary of Health for the Great State of Washington by Governor Jay Inslee in December 2020. He is the first Asian-American physician in this leadership role in the history of the state of Washington. Dr. Shah began a distinguished career as an emergency department physician at Houston’s Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center, where he provided clinical care for over two decades. He started his formal public health journey in 2003 as Chief Medical Officer at Galveston County’s Health District before joining HCPH. Board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care, Dr. Arunima Bera currently works as a ICU pediatric hospitalist with Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, CA. After receiving her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Dr. Bera completed her pediatric residency at the University of Buffalo/Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Richard Chen grew up in South Jersey before attending college at Johns Hopkins University where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. After working at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, he stuck around Baltimore to attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine before matching for emergency medicine residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. After discovering an interest in medical toxicology, he went on to complete a Medical Toxicology Fellowship at Einstein Medical Center in North Philadelphia. He now is member of core faculty at the Einstein Montgomery Medical Center emergency medicine residency. Dr. Chen’s academic interests are in resident and student education and addiction medicine. Outside of medicine, Richard is an avid cross-fitter and currently coaches once a week at his home box. He maintains interests in consumer electronics, video games, building computers and exploring new and unique foodie spots with his wife.
